TitleArt Competition Winners2021-03-10 14:41
Name Level 10
Here is the result of the Art competition during the Winter break.

Please congrats to our winners!

The First Place went to Gayeun Son
She convinced the jury with her well executed and thoughtful drawing of an earth recovering from the effects of Covid-19. Her reference to the little prince adds a fairy tale twist, contradicting the harsh reality of the pandemic and earning her the first place.
The Second Place went to Geunghyul (John) Han
John Han received enough votes to secure second place. His submission was a photograph taken on one of his morning runs including a short poetic paragraph.
Both parts couldn't hold up on their own, but the combination of both, image and text, let you see the grainy image in a new light. It seems like the thoughtful poetic tone of his words echo down the road and are resonated by the rising sun. The green lights imply that we are ready to go, ready for a fresh start.

The Third place went to a surprise contestant, a new student to GPA, Changhyeok Kim.
Drawn in a Manga-Style we can see two teenagers in front of the main building. Both are blushing. Are they in love? Are they just feeling shy, because they are new to the school? These questions aren't answered and frankly they don't need to be. Changhyeok leaves enough room for interpretation while being very clear on one thing. This is a new beginning!

Another Third Place went to Sihoo Park's digital illustration depicts two runners in a baton race, with 2020 handing the lead over to 2021. Although it may seem simple at a first glance, Sihoo managed to include subtle details that underline the bold speech bubbles with an inexplicit subtext. For instance, 2020 is running from darkness and 2021 is heading in a bright direction, or the drops of sweat, the tired eyes and the forced smile on the face of the ending 2020 are hinting at the difficulties we had to battle to get where we are now.

Honorable Mentions (Special Award) went to Seohyun Park
Of course we received and reviewed all the other submissions as well, one was technically perfect, another had a really great concept, but the panel found them lacking something.
There was one submission that stood out from all the others, and not in a bad way.
Seohyun Park, created digital illustrations and tied them to a Naver Cafe Blog site. https://cafe.naver.com/planstudydoinggpa
He wrote this about his intention:

"I felt that I needed a space to communicate with new freshmen and existing students. I felt that we desperately needed a space like this because I lacked a medium to discuss difficult things when I was freshmen. I want to make a fresh start for the new semester by attracting and hanging out with freshmen, friends, and seniors."

Seohyun's submission went beyond simply handing something in. He published his work by himself and it is, and hopefully will remain, on display for a long time.
The panel had a difficult time identifying the elements Seohyun created, which actually speaks for his illustrative design approach.

"You only notice design when it's bad"

(said award winning typographer Erik Spiekerman once)

Our panel agreed that Seohyun's work shouldn't go unnoticed, and thus I am happy to announce our honorable mention goes to him!

Thank you for all your participation.
